Design ensures that a perfect focus is held at all times on the user, the business, and the most important objectives and goals to be achieved by the design system.
Context is ever evolving, shaped by constant physical, emotional, rational, cultural, social, technological and other interventions.
Strong design accommodates and responds to each specific context. Our job is to translate raw, unstructured research into clear, actionable and contextual insights.Craftsmanship is how much attention, and intention, and care we put into our design.
In a world where a premium is placed on speed, this may seem oxymoronic. But explicitly expressing craftsmanship in our design is key to rising above the average, and key to earning the respect of our clients and our customers.
Design systems cannot prosper without change. As designers we embrace a mindset of actively and purposefully creating units of design that can be placed in front of humans for feedback as quickly and as often as possible.
We use the awareness gathered from testing to inform how best to evolve our design system to deepen its relevance and connection with the customer.
Whether we summit - or whether we fall into the abyss - we always accomplish our core objective of developing new understandings.Your organization's challenges are unique. Your UX approach must be unique too.
This UX Playbook is a curated list of Activities (called 'plays') that you can use to create better experiences, products and services for your customers.
A UX Playbook contains the entirety of recommended UX solutions that we can bring to the table as a team. Like the 'plays' that a sports team decides to use in a game, a great coach will adjust what plays are used to suit each specific situation and context.
The Activities that you choose to use from this UX Playbook will depend on the context of your project - and how much time is available to you.
You might use many of the listed Activities (as I do with my teams for full redesign projects that typically last for many weeks) - or you may choose an abbreviated set of Activities for a more focused endeavor that has a shorter time frame. There is no One-Size-Fits-All.
[ If you would like to use some of the "Go-To Activities" of this UX Playbook in a basic 1-Day Design Workshop or a 5-Day Design Sprint, click on the relevant link for a PDF. ]
First we "Diverge" ["Flare"] to generate individual insights, ideas and solutions.
Then we "Converge" ["Focus"] as a group and make decisions.
This repeating process helps us generate a greater number of ideas, and then narrow those down to the winning solution.
